Netilion Smart System for Aquaculture

Fish farmers face many challenges: keeping the stock in a good condition and staying within small budgets for food and other resources. If you keep an eye on the water quality, you can lower the fish mortality in your stock and increase the feed conversion ratio. Netilion Smart System for Aquaculture helps you to do so.

decrease of fish mortality can be reached by good water quality in aquacultures

Many fish farmers know the problem of stock shrinkage. In your aquaculture, you have a higher number of fingerlings in the beginning than grown fish later. Very often, the reason for high mortality rates in aquacultures is poor water quality.

How to increase your stock output

Fish farmers need to deal with high costs for feed or infrastructure and with a varying stock output. The mortality of fish in an aquaculture stock can lower the turnover. Water quality is an important factor that influences the stock condition. With a good water quality management, the fish mortality in aquacultures can be reduced by up to 40 %.

Netilion Smart System for Aquaculture enables you to constantly and easily measure the water quality in aquacultures and fish farms. You can see all relevant information on your smartphone.

The challenge:
The Office for Forests operates a fish farm in Giebenach. In the past, water quality monitoring of the breeding tanks was only realized on a selective basis.

The solution:
Netilion Smart System for Aquaculture realizes continuous water monitoring, even if no employee is on site. Alarms ensure that the staff is immediately informed in the event of deviations in water quality.

Netilion Smart System for Aquaculture

Netilion Smart System is an intelligent measuring system for monitoring the water in aquacultures and fish farms. It consists of two components:

  • Box: a single package containing the measuring equipment which you can install at the relevant measuring spots. You can decide whether you wish to have the box for freshwater or salt water.
  • Smart Systems App: a smartphone app with which you can access the measuring values wherever you are. (For checking measuring data on your desktop PC, you can also use the web application Netilion Value without extra costs.)

Thanks to the intelligent connectivity between the measuring sensors and the smartphone app, monitoring water quality in aquaculture systems is as easy as it has never been before.

You can measure these parameters:

  • Dissolved oxygen
  • Temperature
  • Ammonium
  • pH / Nitrate

Check Values on Your Smartphone

The sensors transmit the measuring values safely to your smartphone. So you can easily check the values on your smartphone - no matter where you are. You can also set up and view the measuring location on a map in your Smart Systems App.

Your advantages:

  • Remotely value check
  • Visualization and evaluation function
  • Safe storage of the measuring data

Smart System notifications on a smartphone

Receive Alarm Notifications

You are able to set up alarms so that you receive a notification on your smartphone in case of emergencies. This way you save time checking values because you can rely on receiving a message whenever a limit value is violated.

Your advantages:

  • Defining individual limit values
  • Receiving alarms directly
  • Quick action made possible

That's how easy it is: how-to video

Netilion Smart System makes monitoring the water quality in aquacultures and fish farms very easy:

  • You order your Netilion Smart System and receive the box.
  • You can either execute the installation and service of your sensors on your own or let an Endress+Hauser service technician help you.
  • Register online and choose your plan.
  • Then you can download your Smart Systems App and get connected to your sensors with your smartphone.

Which Parameters Influence Fish Health?

monitoring of dissolved oxygen in water

Dissolved Oxygen

Every fish needs dissolved oxygen to survive. During the growth phase and during feeding, the fish consume enormous amounts of oxygen, which must be re-added to the water. Oxygen depletion leads to slower growth and, in the worst case, can mean the death of fish. By using aeration, you can hold the concentration of dissolved oxygen in your aquaculture on an optimum level.

In order to hold the setpoint, you need to continuously measure the oxygen concentration and ideally the water temperature. A concentration of 8-10 mg/l of dissolved oxygen is generally recommended. Permanent oxygen measurement protects the fish against oxygen deficiency and reduces waste of money due to overdosing.

monitoring of ammonium in water

High concentration of ammonium (NH4+) has the effect that the fish cannot absorb energy from the feed any more. Even though increased ammonium concentration usually does not directly lead to death, there is always a risk, if the pH of the water rises. Ammonium then converts to ammonia (NH3), which is a very strong fish poison and deadly. A big disaster for your aquaculture stock.

The concentration of ammonium varies depending on the fish feeding and their excretions as well as the water treatment cleaning performance of the recirculation plant. This is why continuous ammonium measurement is so important for monitoring the quality of the fish tank water and controlling the water treatment plant.

monitoring of the nitrate level in water

Nitrate Level

Different concentrations of nitrate usually damage the health of the fish. But high nitrate concentration in the outlet of the fish plant have a negative impact on the environment. Nitrate promotes the growth of algae, which in turn can lead to increased oxygenation in deeper waters. Here anaerobic zones can develop that are very harmful to fish and other organisms in nature.

Observing the nitrate level in an aquaculture system is part of a fish farmer's main duties. Keeping the sensitive biotope in balance is a challenging task. Continuous measurement of nitrate can help to prevent a sudden growth of algae resulting in disturbances of oxygen levels.
